Honors and Awards

Rewarding academic excellence.

The Department of Sociology recognizes student achievement with the presentation of annual department honors and awards to graduating seniors, which are presented by the faculty at an Awards Banquet for the honorees and their parents.

Honors in Sociology

Students who graduate with a GPA of 3.5 or higher will be granted honors in sociology.

Departmental Awards

The awards are based on the submission of papers which are judged by the entire department faculty. The awards include the:

  • Bensman-Vidich Award for Excellence in Academic Research
  • Elliot Liebow Award for Excellence in Field Research
  • William Spinrad Award for Excellence in Library Research
  • Paul Lazarsfeld Award in Quantitative Research
  • Excellence as a Sociology Minor

Announcements regarding the submission of papers to be eligible for these awards are made late in the fall semester.

Alpha Kappa Delta – International Sociology Honor Society

Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, promotes the study of sociology and supports research efforts of its members. Students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 in sociology will be invited to join Alpha Kappa Alpha in their senior year.
